Treatment Foster Care (TFC) continues to be an outstanding program in the Albuquerque area. We serve children with special needs and behavioral challenges in our community. The program’s success is grounded in a relationship based, family focused treatment philosophy. Our staff and families are committed to the ongoing integrity of our program and the success of children.

In 2008, 42 children and youth were discharged from TFC. Of those 42% have achieved permanency. These young people went on to be adopted, emancipated or reunified with their family. The TFC staff is passionate about working with children and families to live safely and successfully in their community as they move out of TFC.

At the end of the calendar year, we have 57 licensed Treatment Families. This year we are excited to have issued 4 new licenses. Many of our current families have been with us for many years and we look forward to growth in 2009. The TFC program continues to be committed to training for our families. We have implemented some new topics this year and plan to add many more training events in the future.

The TFC program has hosted several events this year including our annual bake sale, the second annual Fall Festival, the annual Treatment Foster Parent Appreciation event in May. During the summer some staff and families took groups of kids to do a Ropes course. Ongoing campaigns for the program includes school supply drives, blanket and quilt donations for children, and special activity funding for kids.

The program continues to offer the acupuncture clinic for our children and families, supervised by Dr. Jeff Meyer through the Southwest Acupuncture College. This program has been a wonderful part of our service for the past 11 years. We have begun to offer a sensory and attachment group to our children and parents. The children and parents have a great time interacting with each other in this group. We have also implemented a skills group for our adolescent kids. It has been a productive year for program development.

We want to thank all of those in the community who have supported our program in 2008. We appreciate all of the connections and kindness. We always want to acknowledge the treatment foster care families for all of their love, patience and commitment. Special thanks goes to the amazing staff, for their endless dedication to the children and families that we serve.
Community Services
Claire Barr, LPCC
In June of 2006, La Familia made a strategic move to create a department designed to meet the needs of at-risk children, youth and their families by working with them in their homes and in community settings.

The Community Services Department was developed with an array of services identified as important to increasing resiliency and decreasing the risk of out-of-home placements. During its second year, Community Services broadened its scope of service to add Functional Family Therapy, a therapy modality designed to work with adolescent clients and their family members as a unit. FFT is a nationally recognized, evidence-based modality with an exceptional success rate. In addition to the addition of FFT, the Community Services Department received a 1-year grant to work with at-risk youth in the areas of job readiness, community involvement and teambuilding. Community Services continues to provide in-home services based on goals, interventions, and strategies identified by family members as important to their successful family functioning. This rehabilitation model has been very successful in assisting families with the tools to stay together in the home. Community Services continues to provide Equine Therapy. The equine program is in its 8th year and its 6th year of grant funding. Hundreds of children, adolescents have participated in equine therapy with positive outcomes. The equine program is an area of projected growth for Community Services as is its FFT program.

The Community Services Department is proud of its collaborative partnerships Children, Youth and Families Department, Juvenile Justice system, in-patient treatment centers and other providers of out-patient services in the community.
