Message from the President

It is always a challenge to look back on a year and remember all that has been accomplished. I am happy to share with you our Annual Report for 2005-2006.

Of major significance has been the Strategic Planning Process begun by the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team together. The Mission of La Familia was reaffirmed and reworded to become:
La Familia: the Children’s Safety Net.

Our mission reaffirms our belief that La Familia is central to the healthy growth and healing of children and the adults who care for them. We support and strengthen families, whoever and whenever they come to us. The System of Care that is being built in New Mexico will support the ability of families to care for their children in the community.
As we grow additional community based services such as Home based Therapy, Psychiatry, Comprehensive Community Support Services, Case Management, and Family Stabilization we continue to further the healing of children and families in our community.

Our community based Treatment Foster Care Program provides treatment and safety for severely emotionally disturbed children. Permanent homes for children is the overall goal of all of our programs. Children thrive while living in homes with families. Building families through adoption continues as one of our basic services with more children placed in families through international, domestic, infant and special needs adoption programs.

We continue to provide Infant Adoption Awareness training, statewide, to health professionals. We continue to be the Rapid Response Team for the State of NM in the national AdoptUsKids recruitment project. With the generous

support of United Way of Central NM, our Equine Therapy has expanded its services to included children who have been a witness to domestic violence.

The Deaf Group Home, for deaf teens, continues to provide the services needed to move our deaf teens through High School graduation, into living in their own apartments, attending college and working in the community. Our School Based Social Work program in Charter Schools focuses on helping teens be successful in school.

All of our programs focus on strengthening and building families so La Familia is
the Children’s Safety Net.

Treatment Foster Care Program

During the last year, 80% of the youth in the Treatment Foster Care Program achieved permanency either through adoption, reunification or emancipation. Three of our licensed treatment parents adopted children previously in their care. The TFC program continues to work closely with the Children Youth and Families Department to successfully transfer children from TFC to adoption. We open our doors to prospective adoptive parents and encourage them   to participate in training for special needs children prior to moving forward in the matching and calendar process. Through coordination with the Adopt New Mexico program at La Familia we can continue to provide support and consultation for children moving from the La Familia TFC program into adoptive placements.

The La Familia TFC program supports family connections whenever possible.
We have recently added a full time family trainer to our staff in order to provide additional support and training to biological families. It is beneficial to start training with the biological families early on in their child’s treatment in order to prepare them for participation in team meetings and family contact with the ultimate goal of family reunification.

The most difficult task for any foster care program is to adequately prepare
